Descendants of James Boisseau, Reverend

Generation No. 1

1. REVEREND JAMES1 BOISSEAU, REVEREND died Unknown in bef 1705. He married SARAH HOLMES, daughter of THOMAS HOLMES. She died Unknown in bef 1713.

Notes for REVEREND JAMES BOISSEAU, REVEREND:

Rev. James BOISSEAU was born 1660 in Montauban, France. When the Edict of Nantes came down in 1685, it is said his father, grandfather and one of his brothers were all killed trying to defend their church where they were apparently clergymen. James and his other brother, Joseph Ehyrr BOISSEAU fled to England. Joseph married a Swiss girl and had several children. They both left England headed for Virginia in the United States in 1689, Joseph and his family were on one ship, James, still single at the time, on another. Joseph's ship went off course and ended up in South Carolina. While James made it to Virginia. The two families were separated for many years, until some of Joseph's family later moved to Virginia. James married to Sarah Holmes in Virginia. He ministered at several churches, including St. Peter's Parish. They had at least two children, James (later called Capt. James) and Mary. Rev. James and his wife, Sarah were both dead by 1715, according to records of Prince George County, Virginia.

The Original Immigrant Ancestor, Rev. James Boisseau and his wife Sarah

Holmes, and their Children

The story of the Boisseau family in Virginia begins in Montauban France, in

the 1620's. For two generations, the Boisseau family worked and worshipped in

that region, helping to build the Protestant University. By 1685, the

Protestants had lost power in France, and with the Revocation of the Treaty of

Nantes, they were forced to either accept Catholicism or leave the country.

When the Boisseaus refused to tear down the university that their fathers and

grandfathers had helped to build, they were murdered in the streets. But while

the elders in the family were killed, specifically the father, uncle, and

oldest brother, others survived. The mother, and her two younger sons, James

and Joseph, fled to England, where the king was sympathetic to the plight of

the exiled Protestants. The king planned on using these immigrants to settle

the new world, and offered them enough money and land to provide them with

some security in the colonies. The two brothers, worried that their mother

would not survive the voyage, stayed with her in England until her death in

1689. This is the story of James and Joseph Boisseau, and all their

descendants.

On November 11, 1689, James Boisseau, now a reverend, signed a receipt for

money paid to him to serve as an immigrant minister to the colonies. The

receipt is now at the Bodleian Library at Oxford University.

As legend has it, the two brothers took separate vessels in the same fleet.

Joseph had married Mathilde H. S. DeSaussure while in England (it is beleived she was Swiss),

and so raveled on the ship with women, and presumably other married couples. James, still

unmarried, sailed on the male's vessel. At some point during the voyage, the

ships were separated by a powerful storm, and each brother thought that the

other was lost at sea. Because Joseph's ship was blown so far off course, his

ship landed in South Carolina instead of Virginia, were his brother arrived.

The two branches of the family apparently grew for 80 years without knowing

that the other existed.

Joseph Ehyrr Boisseau and his wife Mathilde H. S. DeSaussure stayed in South

Carolina for only a brief period of time. They apparently found the locals

unfriendly, and unwilling to accept their new Huguenot neighbors. Ironically,

by 1695, John Boisseau, probably a distant cousin of James and Joseph, had

settled in Camden, South Carolina. Joseph however had decided that he would

settle elsewhere, and so left South Carolina for the West Indies, and settled

in St. Christopher's, to raise his family on a sugar plantation.

James Boisseau arrived safely in Virginia, and settled in King and Queen

County, where he had charge of St. John's Parish. By 1694, he had married

Sarah Holmes, who had previously been married to Mr. Bird. The House of

Burgesses which governed Virginia was very insecure about allowing the Parish

officials to have too much power, and so would often dismiss or re-elect a

minister depending on their whims. Even so, James was able to keep control

of his parish for a number of years. Eventually, he moved to another parish,

probably Martins Brandon Parish. Unfortunately, virtually all of the records

of both parishes are either lost or destroyed. Even so, what is known is that

Reverend James Boisseau and Sarah Holmes raised several children. They were,

not necessarily in order:

1. Captain James Boisseau

2. Mary Boisseau

3. Holmes Boisseau

4. Jean Boisseau

5. Susanna Boisseau

All of their children were born sometime between 1692 and probably 1710.

Although it is not known precisely when Reverend James Boisseau and Sarah

Holmes died, James is not found in the records anywhere after 1705, and Sarah

must be dead by 1713, since their daughter, Jean, chooses a guardian, Major

Nathaniel Harrison, in Surry County.

Children of JAMES BOISSEAU and SARAH HOLMES are:

2. i. CAPTAIN JAMES2 BOISSEAU, CAPTAIN, b. Bet. 1692 - 1710; d. Bet. 1768 - 1769.

3. ii. MARY BOISSEAU, b. Bet. 1692 - 1710, VA; d. Unknown.

4. iii. HOLMES BOISSEAU, b. Bet. 1692 - 1710; d. Unknown.

iv. JEAN BOISSEAU, b. Bet. 1692 - 1710; d. Unknown.

5. v. SUSANNA BOISSEAU, b. Bet. 1692 - 1710; d. October 1771.

Generation No. 2

2. CAPTAIN JAMES2 BOISSEAU, CAPTAIN (JAMES1) was born Bet. 1692 - 1710, and died Bet. 1768 - 1769. He married MARY REBECCA HOLT Bet. 1724 - 1726, daughter of JOSEPH HOLT. She died Unknown.

Notes for CAPTAIN JAMES BOISSEAU, CAPTAIN:

Captain James Boisseau was the ancestor to most if not all of the future

Boisseaus of Dinwiddie and Chesterfield Counties. How he gained the title

Captain is not known. He may have served in the British Military or the

Colonial Militia at some point, or he may have been the captain of a vessel

for a period of time, or perhaps the title was honorary. Throughout the period

of his life, the title was often but not always used in the legal documents in

which his name is found. Because of this, it cannot be determined with

certainty when he was first given this title.

Captain James Boisseau first appeared in the records of Prince George County,

witnessing a sale of land from Joshua Pritchett to Henry Willson, on September

30, 1725. By this time he had probably affiliated himself with Bristol Parish,

in Petersburg. Although Tyler's Quarterly states that he became a vestry man

at Bristol Parish in 1722, he was probably too young to have reached that

position in the church. The Parish register states that he became a vestry man

in 1747, so it appears that 1722 was the year that he joined the parish, but

only as a member, and not one of the church elders.

Despite his affiliation with Bristol Parish, he continued to own lands in

other parishes, especially Southwarke Parish in Surry County. On January 7,

1727, he purchased 56 1/2 acres in Southwarke Parish. The court document also

listed his wife, Mary Rebecca Holt. She was the daughter of Reverend Joseph

Holt, and the marriage probably took place sometime between 1724 and 1726. The

couple began to have children in early 1730. Their children were:

1. Lucy Boisseau, born February 4, 1730

2. Elizabeth Boisseau, born September 30, 1733

3. James Boisseau, born May 22, 1736

4. Sarah Boisseau, born March 3, 1738

5. Susanna Boisseau, born October 30, 1741

6. John Boisseau, born February 12, 1747

7. Benjamin Boisseau, born February 28, 1753

8. Molley Holt Boisseau, born September 25, 1756

All of the children's birth dates came from the Bristol Parish register,

except for their first child, Lucy, whose birth came form her tombstone at

Blandford Cemetery. Because Lucy does not appear in that register, or in the

neighboring Albemarle Parish register, where the births of Susanna Boisseau

and David Jones' children appear, she was most likely born in Southwarke

Parish.

By 1752, Captain James Boisseau had acquired some position of prominence not

only in the Parish he served, but in the larger community. On April 25, 1752,

he was appointed to the Commission for Peace, which was responsible for

relations with the local native americans. In 1757, he received a land grant

of 628 acres in Dinwiddie County from the Regal Government in the Colonies.

On November 22, 1768, Captain James Boisseau resigned from the vestry of

Bristol Parish. He probably died within a few years, although the exact date

of his death is unknown. His wife Mary survived him, and in 1772 gave one of

her grandchildren, Molly Pettway, a slave, indicating that Captain James

Boisseau was dead by then. Unfortunately, it is not known when Mary Rebecca

Holt Boisseau died either.

Holmes DeSaussure Ehyrr Boisseau, the only son of Col. DeSaussure Ehyrr

Boisseau and Caroline (La) Roche, was born on the island of St. Christopher's

on May 17, 1740, and was educated, like his father, at the University of

Geneva, in Switzerland. By 1760, towards the end of his stay at the

University, he had to return to St. Christopher's to be near his grandmother,

Mathilde H. S. DeSaussure Boisseau, who was dying. While he was away in

Switzerland, all of his sisters had married and moved away, and he found the

sugar plantation his family had built had fallen into a state of disrepair.

Eventually he decided to leave St. Christopher's for South Carolina, and there

he married Judith Roberdeau, the daughter of General Daniel Roberdeau. On Good

Friday, 1775, Judith gave birth to twin boys, Isaac and Joseph. A few days

later, both Isaac Boisseau and his mother, Judith, fell ill, and both died,

leaving an infant Joseph Holmes DeSaussure Boisseau, and a disconsolate

father.

Within a few years, Holmes DeSaussure Ehyrr Boisseau married his second wife,

Elizabeth Jordan, the daughter of John Jordan. By 1778, the couple, along with

young Joseph relocated to Prince George County, and at this point the two

branches of the Boisseau family, separated by 80 years, finally learned of the

true fate of their ancestor's brother.

Between 1778 and 1789, Holmes and Elizabeth Boisseau had two other children,

Holmes John Alexander Boisseau, and Jane Boisseau. Unfortunately, the fate of

these two children has been lost. Elizabeth Jordan Boisseau died in France in

1789, but her husband, Holmes DeSaussure Ehyrr Boisseau, continued, traveling

back and forth from Virginia to France. A copy of some of his correspondence

with his first child, Joseph, has survived, and most of the history of this

branch of the family comes form the letters sent from the father to his first

born son.

By 1824, Holmes DeSaussure Ehyrr Boisseau, like his grandfather, had returned

to his birth place to die, and was buried on St. Christopher's Island.

Jeanne Robert Boisseau, one of five daughters of Col. DeSaussure Ehyrr

Boisseau and Caroline (La) Roche, was an older sister to Holmes DeSaussure

Ehyrr Boisseau. She was born probably between 170 and 1735. On June 8, 1748,

she married Jean Francois De Bois. While little is known about this couple,

they did apparently have at least one child, Pierre Francois De Bois. Pierre

Francois De Bois joined the American Army on October 7, 1776, and was made a

Brevet Major. Between 1776 and 1779, he served in the Army, until losing an

arm in the Battle of the Woods. On April 9, 1779, he resigned form the

American Army, and afterwards, he returned to France, receiving a hero's

welcome.

Note: Some of the early information is now in doubt concerning Joseph Ehyrr

Boisseau, and his descendants.

Children of JAMES BOISSEAU and MARY HOLT are:

i. LUCY3 BOISSEAU, b. February 08, 1729/30; d. Unknown; m. THOMAS WILLIAMS, November 27, 1746, Bristol Parish; b. Saint James Parish, London, England; d. Unknown.

Notes for LUCY BOISSEAU:

Lucy Boisseau, the first child of Captain James Boisseau and Mary Rebecca

Holt, was born on February 4, 1730. She married Thomas Williams an Englishman

born in 1702 in St. James Parish, London, on November 27, 1746 in Bristol

Parish. She was his second wife. His first wife, Rachael Freeman, had died on

July 23, 1746, leaving three children, one son and two daughters. One of the

daughters, Hannah Williams, died on July 5, 1747. Later that month, Lucy

Boisseau Williams also died, and was buried at Blandford Cemetery next to the

both Rachael and Hannah. Lucy Boisseau's tombstone reads:

"Here lies in the hope of a blessed Resurrection,

the body of Mrs. Lucy Williams. wife of

Mr. Thomas Williams, She was ye daughter

of Mr. James Boisseau & Mary his wife

Born February ye 8th 1730. Married November

the 27th 1746. who died ye 25th of July 1747

Aged 16 years five months & two weeks &

3 days. who was very much beloved and lamented

Young men & women, all & standers by

That on these tombs do cast a wandering eye

Call on ye Lord whilst in your health & youth

For die you must, it is a certain truth

Your life a Shadow is more pris'd than gold

As for Example here you may behold

Beneath these mournful tombs there lyeth three

Which maketh eight out of one Familey

Two loving virtuous wives and child most dear

All died within two days & one whole year

Whose patience quitted not their silent breast

But lull'd them into an eternal rest

To wait in peace, until that glorious day

The trumpet sounds, to call them hence away"

served as a witness to the wills of friends. While his first purchase of land

is in Martins Brandons Parish on April 2, 1728, eventually he moved to

Dinwiddie County, after receiving a land grant of 852 acres there on September

" DEATHS

DIED, on Monday the 12th, inst.

Mrs. AMEY BOISSEAU, the wife

of Mr. Benjamin Boisseau, of

Dinwiddie county."

Benjamin Boisseau died sometime later, in 1819-20, based on the land tax

records of Dinwiddie County.

Notes for AMEY:

Amey Boisseau died on October 12, 1807, and her obituary appeared in the

Petersburg Intelligencer on October 20, 1807:

" DEATHS

DIED, on Monday the 12th, inst.

Notes for ROBERT GOODWYN BOISSEAU:

The third child of Benjamin Boisseau and his wife Amey, Robert Goodwyn

Boisseau, was born in 1784. He died a young man on October 9, 1807, most

likely of a contagious illness, since his mother died three days later. An

obituary notice appeared in the Petersburg Intelligencer, October 20, 1807,

page 3, column 1:

" COMMUNICATED

DIED on Friday evening, the 9th of October,

ROBERT G. BOISSEAU, in the 23d year of his

age, at his father's seat, in the county of

Dinwiddie. This young man, in every relation

of life; whether as a son, a brother, a friend,

or a citizen, was equally excellent, and praise-

worthy; a strict regard for justice, and

punctuality, appeared in all his transactions.

He was a lover of mankind, and his diffusive

benevolence formed the most amiable part of

his character. He was in fine the genuine

offspring of the heart.

Can I forget the tears that constant fell,

When warm in youth, he bade the world

farewell,

When awful candles made a noon-day night,

And the dim windows shed a solemn light;

But all is calm, in death's eternal sleep,

Where grief forgets to groan, and love

to weep."

.

9. JAMES BOISSEAU3 JONES (SUSANNA2 BOISSEAU, JAMES1) was born April 23, 1731, and died Unknown. He married ANN GILLIAM. She died Unknown.

Child of JAMES JONES and ANN GILLIAM is:

i. SARAH4 JONES, d. Unknown.

Notes for SARAH JONES:

Sarah Boisseau's name appears once so far in and county or parish records, in

the Albemarle Parish Register, as a godparent to Elizabeth Jones, born on May

18, 1745, the daughter of James Boisseau Jones and Ann Gilliam, along with

Holmes Boisseau and Elizabeth Barns. There is reason to believe however that

Sarah Boisseau was not Holmes Boisseau's wife, but instead was his daughter.

The Albemarle Parish Register also lists a Holmes Jones, born on June 15,

1758, the son of David Jones, Jr. and his wife, Sarah. When this Holmes Jones

died in 1810, he listed among his children, Sarah Boisseau Jones, indicating

that his mother was Sarah Boisseau. Examination of the wills of this Holmes

Jones' extended family may answer the question of who Sarah Boisseau really

was.

Notes for DANIEL FITZPATRICK BOISSEAU:

Daniel Fitzpatrick Boisseau, the first child of James Boisseau and Anner

Fitzpatrick, was apparently well educated, and possibly attended college in

Europe or possibly Harvard. His sons all attended William & Mary, so it is

also possible that he went there, although he is not mentioned in the alumni

records. He was probably in college went he was called to serve in the

American Revolution, so his younger brother John served in his place.

He lived in Dinwiddie County with his family, until the early 1780s. by 1783,

he had moved to out of Dinwiddie County, to neighboring Chesterfield County,

probably to manage property originally owned by his late father. He was taxed

for the last time on his personal property in Dinwiddie County on April 10,

1782. At the time, he owned 3 horses, 8 heads of cattle, and nine slaves, four

of which being above the age of 16. Their names were Bob, Patt, Roger,

Phillis, Jessee, Esther, Fanny, Sylvia, and Dilsey. It is unknown at this time

how many of these slaves he took with him to Chesterfield County.

On January 28, 1786, Daniel Fitzpatrick Boisseau married Priscilla Hill, the

daughter of Edward Hill (deceased) and Elizabeth Hill. Richard Covington

served as her guardian, and Thomas Cogbill was the witness to the wedding. The

ceremony was performed by Rev. William Leigh of Manchester Parish Episcopal

Church. Shortly after the wedding, within the first two or three years, the

couple had their first child, and continued to have children until around

1800.

(* Based on internment records of Blandford Cemetery. Since Anner Patrick

Boisseau is the only daughter of Daniel Fitzpatrick Boisseau mentioned in his

mother's will, she, and not Rebecca, was most likely the first daughter of

Daniel Fitzpatrick Boisseau and Priscilla Hill.)

On June 8, 1795, Daniel was appointed the guardian of Nancy Hardie, the

orphaned daughter of William Hardie. He gave consent for her marriage to

Joseph Rogers, and they were married on April 3, 1796.

The following year, on February 4, 1797, Daniel served along with his brother

Patrick as co-executor of their mother Anner Fitzpatrick Boisseau Yeargain's

will. He also served as executor of his mother-in-law Elizabeth Hill's will on

July 13, 1801. In 1820, he was listed as a "gentleman justice of Chesterfield

County," along with his son, Edward Hill Boisseau.

Daniel Fitzpatrick Boisseau died on January 31, 1824. His death was noted in

the Richmond Enquirer on Thursday, February 5, page 3, column 7:

"Died suddenly on Saturday last at an advanced

age, Mr. Daniel Boisseau, one of the most respected

citizens of the county of Chesterfield."

Daniel Boisseau was survived by his wife, Priscilla. The family home was

inherited by his daughter Rebecca and her husband Thomas E. Gary, and

Priscilla lived with the couple there until her death, sometime between April

4, 1856, the date she wrote her will, and November 20, 1856, the date her will

was proved in Petersburg court.

Children of DANIEL BOISSEAU and PRICILLA HILL are:

i. JAMES5 BOISSEAU, b. Bet. 1786 - 1787, VA; d. 1809, Pennsylvania.

Notes for JAMES BOISSEAU:

James Boisseau, born around 1786-8. He graduated from the College of William &

Mary in 1807, and shortly thereafter enrolled at the University of

Pennsylvania to study medicine. He died while at the University, and on

October 7, 1809, his obituary appeared in the Richmond Visitor, page 142, col.

2:

"---At Lumberton, (New Jersey) of a Bilious fever,

James Boisseau, of Petersburg, Student of Medicine,

in the University of Pennsylvania."

There is no proof that James was the child of Daniel and Priscilla, but there

is some circumstantial evidence. In the William & Mary Alumni records, he is

listed as being from Chesterfield County. At the time of his birth, the only

Boisseaus living in Chesterfield County married and having children were

Daniel Boisseau and possibly Thomas Boisseau, and Thomas has another child

named James. Also, of all the Boisseaus, only Daniel apparently sent all of

his male children to college. Both Edward Hill Boisseau and Peter Fitzpatrick

Boisseau attended William & Mary. William E. Boisseau, the son of David

Boisseau, was the only other Boisseau to attend William & Mary around the same

time (1819). Finally, Daniel apparently felt it was important to pass along

family names, and so his second son, Edward Hill Boisseau, is named after

Daniel's father-in-law, Anner Patrick Boisseau is named after his mother,

Elizabeth Boisseau is named after Daniel's mother-in-law, and Peter

Fitzpatrick Boisseau is named after Daniel's grandfather. It is unclear where

names Rebecca and Harriet come from, but Rebecca may be named after Daniel's

grandmother, Mary Rebecca Holt, while Harriet might be named after Daniel's

wife Priscilla's grandmother, whose name is unknown. It is possible that the

James Boisseau who attended William & Mary was not the same James Boisseau who

attended the University of Pennsylvania, but both of them disappear after

1809, so they were probably the same person.

ii. ANNER PATRICK BOISSEAU, b. Bet. 1787 - 1790, VA; d. Unknown; m. JOHN WATKINS, January 13, 1812; d. Unknown.

Notes for ANNER PATRICK BOISSEAU:

Anner Patrick Boisseau, the second child of Daniel Fitzpatrick Boisseau and

Priscilla Hill, was born sometime around 1787-90. She married John Watkins of

Chesterfield County on January 13, 1812. It is unknown whether this couple had

any children. Anner Patrick Boisseau married her second husband, James

Hamlin, sometime before 1824. They had at least one child:

1. James Boisseau Hamlin, born January 26, 1825

It is unknown if they had any other children, or when they died.

The Children of Anner Patrick Boisseau and her two

husbands, John Watkins and James Hamlin

James Boisseau Hamlin was born on January 26, 1825, in Dinwiddie County. He

died on June 30, 1907, and was buried in Blandford Cemetery. This line is

untraced.

23. iii. REBECCA HILL BOISSEAU, b. November 1787, VA; d. December 28, 1862, VA.

24. iv. EDWARD HILL BOISSEAU, b. Abt. 1790, VA; d. Bef. April 14, 1834, VA.

v. ELIZABETH BOISSEAU, b. Aft. 1791, VA; d. Unknown; m. THOMAS HOWLETT; d. Unknown.

Notes for ELIZABETH BOISSEAU:

Elizabeth Boisseau, the fifth child of Daniel Fitzpatrick Boisseau and

Priscilla Hill, married Thomas Howlett on November 15, 1808. The Census of

1850 lists Elizabeth Howlett as 55 years old, so she was only around 13 when

she married. They had ten known children, all listed in Thomas Howlett's will,

written on November 12, 1846. They were:

1. Julia Anna Howlett, born 1809

2. Marietta Howlett, born 1811

3. Elizabeth Jane Howlett

4. Martha Howlett

5. Rebecca Howlett

6. Harriet Howlett, born 1816

7. Thomas Howlett, born 1817

8. William Howlett, born 1820

9. James B. Howlett, born 1820

10. John Howlett, born 1828

Thomas Howlett died sometime between November 20, 1846, the day he added a

codicil to his will, and December 14, 1846, the day his will was proved in

court. The date of death of Elizabeth Boisseau Howlett has not been

established.

vi. HARRIET BOISSEAU, b. November 25, 1797, VA; d. December 06, 1852, VA; m. JOHN WINSTON JONES; d. Unknown.

Notes for HARRIET BOISSEAU:

The sixth child of Daniel Fitzpatrick Boisseau and Priscilla Hill, Harriet

Boisseau, was born on November 25, 1797. She married John Winston Jones, the

son of Alexander Jones and Mary Winston, sometime before March 17, 1820, when

she was mentioned as his wife in a deed of trust. John Winston Jones

graduated from the College of William & Mary around 1813, about the same time

as Edward Hill Boisseau, Harriet Boisseau's older brother. it may be through

Edward that these two were introduced. This couple had at least three

children:

1. James B. Jones

2. Alexander Jones

3. Mary W. Jones

After graduation, John Winston Jones returned home to Chesterfield County,

and began practicing law. He began serving as prosecuting attorney for the

fifth Virginia circuit in 1818. At the same time, he often served as the

attorney for members of his extended family, including his father-in-law,

Daniel Fitzpatrick Boisseau. He also served as a member of the Virginia

Constitutional Convention of 1829 and 1830. In 1834, John Winston Jones was

persuaded to run for Congress. A notice appeared in the Richmond Enquirer, and

later in the American Constellation, Saturday, October 4, 1834, page 3, column

2:

"The Editors of the Enquirer will please announce

JOHN WINSTON JONES, Esq., of Chesterfield, a

candidate to represent the District composed of the

counties of Goochland, Powhatan, Chesterfield,

Amelia, and Nottoway, in the next Congress of the

United States. Mr. Jones has consented to be run,

and was declared at Amelia Court, on Thursday last.

A VOTER of Amelia.

Sept. 30, 1834"

John Winston Jones was elected easily, and began serving in the House of

Representatives on March 4, 1835, as a member of the Jacksonian Party. In 1843

he was elected Speaker of the House and held that office until he retired from

the House due to an illness. He returned to politics briefly as a member of

the House of Delegates, before retiring again. Shortly thereafter, on January

29, 1848, he died, and was buried at the family home, "Dellwood."

His obituary appeared in the Richmond Enquirer, Friday, February 4, 1848. He

was survived by his wife, Harriet Boisseau Jones. On February 14, 1848, his

death was announced in Chesterfield County Court at a meeting of the Court,

its officers, and members. On Friday, March 10, 1848, this article appeared in

the Richmond Whig and Advertiser, page, 4, column 5:

"TRIBUTE OF RESPECT

In Chesterfield County Court Feb. 14th, 1848.

At a meeting of the court, its officers and bar, Edward

Anderson, Esq. was called to the Chair, and Silas Chea-

tham, Esq. appointed Secretary:

Whereupon, Holden Rhodes, Esq. in a few feeling and

appropriate remarks, announced the death of the Hon JNO

W. JONES, late a member of this bar; and on his motion,

the following preamble and resolutions were adopted:

It having pleased God to deprive us, by death, of our

friend, John Winston Jones--for many years a member of

this bar, which he adorned by his eloquence and ability--

late the representatives of this county in the House of Del-

egates, and formerly the Representative of this district in

the House of Representatives, in both which bodies he was

raised by his distinguished merit to the chair--a man in all

the relations of life blameless-- and uniting in his character

great talents and exalted virtues to manners so full of gen-

tleness and kindness, that he won alike the love, the re-

spect and admiration of all who knew him. Therfore,

Resolved, That we deploe the death of our lamented

friend, who has been cut off in the mature vigor of his

mind, and in the midst of his useful and honorable career,

as a great public as well as private calamity.

Resolved, That, as a mark of respect to his memory, we

will wear the usual badge of mourning for thirty days.

Resolved, That these proceedings, by leave of the Court

be entered on its minutes, and that the Clerk be requested

to transmit a copy thereof to the excellent widow and fam-

ily of our departed friend, and to express to them our pro-

found sympathy in their sore bereavement.

Resolved, That these procedings be published in the

newspapers of Richmond and Petersburg.

And, on motion, the Court adjourned until the next term

EDWARD ANDERSON, Ch'm

Silas Cheatham, Sec'y"

Harriet Boisseau Jones died on December 6, 1852, and was buried in the family

cemetery next to her husband, at their home, "Dellwood." Her burial was

mentioned in the Richmond Enquirer, Tuesday, December 14, 1852, page 3, column

2:

"The widow of the late John Winston Jones, Esq., of

Chesterfield county, was buried on Tuesday last, in that

county. This afflicting event will account for the absence

of Mr. Alexander Jones, form his seat in the House of Dele-

gates, during the present week."

In her will, written on October 11, 1852, Harriet Boisseau Jones divided her

estate between her daughter, sons, and a granddaughter. Mary W. Jones Townes,

her daughter, was given the slaves Irena, and Lilly, and Lilly's children,

Lucy and Emma, as well as the estate itself. James B. Jones, a son, was given

the slave Susan, and her two children, Frances and Susan, as well as assorted

household and kitchen furniture and livestock. Her granddaughter, Mary Townes,

was given a slave girl named Killy. Her son Alexander Jones, the portion of

the property held by his grandmother, Priscilla Hill Boisseau, due to Harriet

Boisseau Jones. The will was witnessed by Rebecca H. Boisseau Gary, Harriet's

sister, and Elizabeth R. Gibbs, Harriet's niece, who both appeared in

Chesterfield County Court to prove the will on December 13, 1852.

18. JOSEPH4 BOISSEAU (BENJAMIN3, JAMES2, JAMES1) was born 1775, and died 1816. He married MILDRED STANFIELD COLEMAN, daughter of WILLIAMSON COLEMAN and MILLIAN HARDAWAY. She was born May 1780, and died Unknown.

Notes for JOSEPH BOISSEAU:

Joseph Boisseau, the first child of Benjamin Boisseau and his wife Amey, was

born probably around 1775, based on the personal property taxes of his father.

His parents are unknown at this time. He was not the son of Holmes Boisseau.

In 1800, and was appointed Commissioner of Revenue for Dinwiddie County from

1800 to 1806. Probably sometime near the turn of the century, he also married

Mildred Coleman, the daughter of Williamson Coleman and Millian Hardaway. This

couple had several children, unfortunately, not all of them are known, They

were:

1. Joseph Williamson Boisseau, born 1803

2. William H. Boisseau, born April 8, 1805

3. George Franklyn Boisseau

4. Roger Boisseau

5. Amy Ann Goodwyn Boisseau

6. Elizabeth C. Boisseau

7. the wife of Russell Dance of Murfreesboro, Tennessee

Joseph Boisseau served in the War of 1812, as the 2nd Sergeant in Capt. David

Bunow's Company in the Sixty-second Militia. He died in 1816, at about 42

years old, and in 1819, part of his estate was divided between his sons,

William, George, and Joseph, and William Hyde, the second husband of Mildred

Coleman, and Roger Mallory, the husband of Elizabeth Boisseau. In 1821,

another part of his estate was divided between his sons George, Roger, and

William.

Mildred Coleman Boisseau married her second husband, Reverend William Hyde in

late 1819 or early 1820, for the marriage was referred to in a letter from

Boswell Hutchings in Dinwiddie County to William Hutchings in Murfreesboro,

Tennessee. In the letter, William Hutchings was asked to tell Russell Dance

about the wedding. Mildred Coleman was Russell Dance's mother-in-law, and

William Hyde was his former father-in-law. On July 24, 1837, Mildred Coleman

Boisseau Hyde wrote her will, dividing her estate between her sisters Dionita

Coleman, and Harriet Coleman, her son George J. Boisseau, and her daughter

Elizabeth C. Boisseau Mallory. She basically cut off her other living

children, Joseph William Boisseau and William H. Boisseau, to each she left

one dollar.

Children of JOSEPH BOISSEAU and MILDRED COLEMAN are:

i. GEORGE FRANKLYN5 BOISSEAU, d. Unknown.

Notes for GEORGE FRANKLYN BOISSEAU:

George Franklyn Boisseau, the third child of Joseph Boisseau and Mildred

Coleman, received 253 acres 10 miles north of the county courthouse on Cox

Road from his father's estate in 1820. He received another 78 acres 5 mile

north of the county courthouse on Butterwood Road by 1829. Family letters

indicate that he was educated in Pennsylvania in medicine. He apparently moved

to Washington County, Tennessee in 1837. Unlike his brother Joseph, he did not

keep a portion of his property in Dinwiddie County. He apparently moved to

Mississippi with his sister Amy Ann Godwyn Boisseau Thweatt, after the death

of her husband, Henry C. Thweatt. This line has not been traced.

ii. ROGER BOISSEAU, d. Unknown.

Notes for ROGER BOISSEAU:

Roger Boisseau, the fourth child of Joseph Boisseau and Mildred Coleman, his

name does not appear in the land tax or personal property tax rolls of

Dinwiddie County, so he may have died before he could come of age, or perhaps

his inheritance was property outside of Dinwiddie County, or Virginia. He was

not mentioned in his mother's will, written in 1837, and was most likely dead

by then. More likely however is the possibility that this is Roger Mallory,

the husband of Elizabeth C. Boisseau, however, this line has not been traced.

iii. AMY ANN GOODWYN BOISSEAU, d. Unknown; m. HENRY C. THWEATT, January 24, 1827; d. Unknown.

Notes for AMY ANN GOODWYN BOISSEAU:

Amy Ann Goodwyn Boisseau, the fifth child of Joseph Boisseau and Mildred

Coleman, married Henry C. Thweatt on January 24, 1827. It is believed that

this line eventually moved to Mississippi, based on some family letters, but

this line has not been traced.

30. iv. ELIZABETH C. BOISSEAU, d. Unknown.

31. v. JOSEPH WILLIAMSON BOISSEAU, b. 1800, Dinwiddie County, Virginia; d. July 04, 1867, Harrison county, Texas.

32. vi. WILLIAM H. BOISSEAU, b. April 08, 1805; d. Unknown.

19. WILLIAM4 BOISSEAU (BENJAMIN3, JAMES2, JAMES1) was born 1782 in VA, and died November 22, 1838 in Dinwiddie County, Virginia. He married ATHALIA KEZIA W. GOODWYN January 11, 1808, daughter of ESAU GOODWYN and S. STUDIVANT. She died Unknown.

Notes for WILLIAM BOISSEAU:

William Boisseau, the second child of Benjamin Boisseau and his wife Amey,

was born around 1782. While Pamplin Hall lists William Boisseau as a fifth-

generation Boisseau, he was actually a fourth generation Boisseau, a great

grandson of Reverend James Boisseau. On January 11, 1808, he married

Athaliah Keziah W. Goodwyn, the daughter of Esau Goodwyn and S. Sturdivant.

The following year, they had the first of several children:

1. William E. Boisseau, born 1809

2. Edward L. Boisseau, born 1812

3. Albert Winfield Boisseau, born 1814

4. Joseph G. Boisseau, born February 27, 1817

5. Martha Eliza Boisseau, born July 21, 1819

6. Leander Boisseau, born 1822

7. Ann E. Boisseau, born between 1822-9

8. Andrew J. Boisseau, born 1829

William Boisseau began to build the family home "Tudor Hall" shortly after

the purchase of 100 acres on Duncan Road for $1000. The home was finished by

1814. Over the next twenty years, William continued to increase the size of

his property and expand the tobacco farm he had begun. He died on November 22,

1838, and his death was noted in the American Constellation, Friday, November

23, 1838, page 2, column 7.

"Died yesterday morning at his residence in Dinwiddie

County, Mr. William Boisseau for many years Inspector

at Moore's Warehouse in this town. He died as he lived,

an honest man, the noblest work of God."

He was survived by his wife, who lived at Tudor Hall with her children, until

the Civil War, when the family home was used as the headquarters for the

Confederate generals during the defense of Petersburg in 1865.

Children of WILLIAM BOISSEAU and ATHALIA GOODWYN are:

i. ANDREW J.5 BOISSEAU, d. Unknown.

ii. WILLIAM E. BOISSEAU, b. 1809; d. Unknown.

Notes for WILLIAM E. BOISSEAU:

Notes for REBECCA HILL BOISSEAU:

Internment records of Blandford Cemetery indicate that Rebecca Hill Boisseau,

the third child of Daniel Fitzpatrick Boisseau and Priscilla Hill, was born in

November of 1787. Since she was not listed in her grandmother Anner

Fitzpatrick Boisseau Yeargain's will, she was most likely the younger sister

to Anner Fitzpatrick Boisseau, who was listed in the will.

Rebecca Hill Boisseau married Thomas E. Gary on Novemer 7, 1805. Their

marriage was mentioned in the Petersburg Intelligencer, Tuesday, November 12,

1805, page 3, column 3:

H. Gary. They had at least one child:

1. John G. E. Gary, born July 26, 1818

Thomas E. Gary died in the 1820's, and although he is probably buried in

Blandford Cemetery, no tombstone makes where he is buried, and there are no

internment records indicating his burial spot. He is most likely buried in the

Mare and Gary square. His wife, Rebecca H. Boisseau Gary, died on December 28,

1862 of apoplexy, and was buried on December 30, 1862, in Blandford Cemetery,

Edward Hill Boisseau, the fourth child of Daniel Fitzpatrick Boisseau and

Priscilla Hill, was born probably in the early 1790s. He attended William &

Mary, and graduated in 1813. While he was attending college, he probably met

John Winston Jones, the future Speaker of the House of Representatives, who

would become his brother-in-law, the husband of Harriet Boisseau. After

college, Edward Hill Boisseau married Sarah Worsham Baugh, the daughter of

Archibald Baugh and Sarah Eppes Worsham, on September 29, 1814, in Petersburg.

By this time, Edward had most likely passed the bar and had begun to practice

law in Petersburg and the nearby counties. By 1820, he was already a judge in

Chesterfield County. On March 13, 1819, he began serving as the junior

delegate for Chesterfield County in the House of Delegates. He served three

consecutive terms in the House of Delegates. By 1820, Edward and Sarah had

"Departed this life at the residence of Mr. James Prentis,

in Prince George County, on the 23rd inst, Mrs. SARAH

W., wife of Edward Boisseau, deceased, of Chesterfield.

Mrs. B. had been laboring under the gnawings of a pul-

monary disease, but not until very recently did the fatal

malady develope itself in its true character, and the alarm-

ing monster, death, made his approach; but ah, he found

her prepared to receive him. She professed to find that

pearl of great price about ten years ago, and attached

herself to the Presbyterian church, in which she lived an

exemplary and constant member until the day of her

death, and in her character is exhibited that of the chris-

tian:and her numerous deeds of charity will long be re-

membered, for her heart was always open to the petitions

of the poor. She was a kind mistress, an affectionatemo-

ther, and beloved for her amicable qualities by all who

knoew her. She has left five children and a large circle of

relations and friends to deplore their irreparable loss, but

their loss is her eternal gain."

Her will was proved in Chesterfield County Court by her brother-in-law, Peter

Fitzpatrick Boisseau, John Bradley, and P. Gannon, on June 13, 1842. In her

will, she divide her estate among her five children.

25. PETER FITZPATRICK5 BOISSEAU (DANIEL FITZPATRICK4, JAMES3, JAMES2, JAMES1) was born Aft. 1798 in VA, and died Unknown. He married ELIZA BRADLEY January 21, 1824, daughter of JOHN BRADLEY and MARY ARCHER. She died Unknown.

Notes for PETER FITZPATRICK BOISSEAU:

Peter Fitzpatrick Boisseau, the seventh child of Daniel Fitzpatrick Boisseau

and Priscilla Hill, attended the College of William & Mary, and graduated in

1819. On January 21, 1824, he married Eliza Bradley , the daughter of John

Royall Bradley and Mary Archer. This couple had several children:

1. John F. P. Boisseau, born September 15, 1829

2. James Boisseau, born 1831

3. Theodorick Boisseau, born 1833

4. Richard Watson Boisseau, born 1835

5. Marianna Boisseau, born March 14, 1840

6. William E. Boisseau, born 1842

7. Caleb Capers Boisseau, born 1848

Peter Fitzpatrick Boisseau and his wife, Eliza Bradley began their life

together in Chesterfield County, as Peter became one of the more respected

members of the community. When his father died in 1824, Peter appeared in

Court on April 24, 1824, and served as security for his brother, Edward Hill

Boisseau, the Administrator of their father's estate. When Edward died in

1833-4, Peter appeared in Court again, this time to accept the position of

Administrator of their father's will, in his brother's place.

Also while a resident of Chesterfield County, he often served as the security

in the weddings of friends and relatives, including the wedding of Richard

Booth and Maria Bass, on August 14, 1823, Josiah Russell and Sally L.

Covington, on March 7, 1832, his niece Marietta Howlett and Anthony Debrill,

on October 8, 1832, another niece, Mary W. Jones, and George W. B. Townes, on

January 3, 1837, and he served as a witness to the marriage of a third niece,

Sarah W. Boisseau, to Robert Thomas Lamb, on December 12, 1839. Toward the end

of the 1830s, he purchased land in Southampton County, and sold it, then on

December 27, 1840, he purchased 1200 acres in Amelia County, where he lived

the rest of his life, and raised his children. He quickly became acquainted

with his neighbors, and again served as security in at least one wedding,

between Samuel F. Cardoza and Amelia M. Edwards, on September 23, 1843.

He became popular enough in the community to run for a political office, and

on December 4, 1848, he began his first term in the General Assembly as the

Delegate for Amelia County. His first term lasted until March 19, 1849. He

served again on December 2, 1850, to March 31, 1851.

After his second term, Peter went back to the family farm in Amelia, but

probably also spent time with his mother, who was living in Petersburg. When

she wrote her will on April 4, 1856, she appointed him Executor of the will,

which was proved in Hustings Court on November 20, 1856.

In 1863, his 1200 acre tract of land in Amelia County, but apparently

continued to live there on another parcel of land, where the family home was

located. The date of his death has not been determined, but it was before

1870. His wife, Eliza Bradley Boisseau died sometime after 1880, presumably in

Amelia County.

The dates of their deaths have not been determined, but Peter died sometime

after 1863, when he acknowledged the sale of 1200 acres of land in Amelia

County.

private in Company G, 1st Regiment, Virginia Cavalry, in Wickham's Brigade. On

October 17, 1864, he was wounded at the Battle of Cedar Creek, and sent to the

General Hospital in Farmville. He arrived at the hospital on October 21, and

there the doctors determined that he "suffered from a wound on his right side,

and injured ribs due to the wound." he was evidently released from the

hospital at some point, and returned to duty, for he was captured later by the

Union forces, and on April 27, 1865, he signed the Parole of Honor, stating

that he would not do anything directly or indirectly against the United States

until he was exchanged. He was then allowed to return to Amelia County. He

Richard Watson Boisseau was listed as 26 years old, and described as five feet

eleven inches tall, with dark hair and a dark complexion, and hazel eyes.

He was a member of the Petersburg Canada

Volunteers

His remains fitly repose beside those of

his old companion in arms and glory

Capt. Richard McRae.

June 20, 1830, and his obituary appeared in the Richmond Enquirer, Friday,

June 25, 1830, page 3, column 6, and in the American Beacon, Saturday, June

The Richmond Enquirer

"OBITUARY

We have to lament the death of ROGER MALLORY, Esq. Sergeant

of the Town of Petersburg, who expired on Sunday morning the

20th inst. Mr. M. for some time had been in a declining state of

health; but it was only on Thursday last that his disease

assumed such a type, as seriously to alarm his family. He was

a member of the corps of Petersburg Volunteers -- in his

disposition kind, hospitable and generous -- He will be long and

sincerely regretted by a large circle of connections and friends."

The Petersburg Old Dominion &

The American Beacon

"OBITUARY

Departed this life on Sunday morning last, MR. ROGER MALLORY,

long a most respectable resident, and for many years, Sergeant of the

town of Petersburg. We believe we speak within the bounds of the

strictest propiety, when we say that Roger Mallory has descended to

the tomb, without an enemy in the world, regarding every human

being as his friend, he so deported himself as to acquire the

unbounded comfidence of his fellow citizens; and in the discharge

of his duties, as a public officer, often necessarily very unpleasant,

such was his correct and gentlemanly conduct, that he gave universal

satisfaction to all parties. While we thus speak of Mr. Mallory as an

individual, and as an officer of justice, we must not forget that he was

a patriot -- in the strictest sense of the word, a patriot. At the

commencement of the last war with England, when the unfortunate

Hull surrendered his army to the enemy, and laid open the north-

western frontier to the savages, roger Mallory was among the first of

our gallant youth to enroll his name in the Petersburg (Canadian)

Volunteers, and pledged his life to redeem the lost reputation of his

country, or perish in the attempt. And gloriously was that pledge

redeemed. At Fort Meigs, at the river Thames, at Sandusky, on Lake

Erie, (for altho' our Volunteers appeared only as soldiers, yet there

were some gallant hearts among them who had been familiar with the

perils of the deep) our noble band distinguished itself -- Roger

Mallory was ever first with the foremost, disputing the palm of glory

with his gallant competitors.

We will not pursue this subject further. Roger Mallory requires not

our eulogy--that is engraven on the hearts of his friends--on the heart

of every member of this community.

On Monday evening his remains were deposited in the silent earth,

attended by the Masonic fraternity, the Petersburg Benevolent

Mechanic Association with a numerous train of mourning

relatives and friends, forming altogether one of the largest processions

ever witnessed in this town on a similar occasion."

Children of ELIZABETH BOISSEAU and ROGER MALLORY are:

He married JOSEPHINE ELIZABETH BOISSEAU April 11, 1866, daughter of JAMES BOISSEAU and ELIZABETH SCOTT. She was born February 04, 1843, and died April 07, 1906 in Shreveport, Louisiana.

Notes for JOSEPH BOISSEAU, CAPTAIN:

Capt. Joseph Boisseau, a cotton planter and factor, and owner and dealer in real estate in Shreveport, La., has in his veins the blood of the old French Huguenots who came to this country on account of their religious belief, taking up their abode in the State of Virginia. Capt. Boisseau was born in Dinwiddie County, Va., January 23, 1829, to Joseph and Julia (Rives) Boisseau, who were also Virginians, the father being an honest and fairly successful tiller of the soil. In the winter of 1848 he moved to Harrison County, Tex., and continued to make his home in the Lone Star State until his death, which occurred about 1868. After this event his widow removed to Louisiana and here she passed from life in 1874, having borne a family of eight children, five of whom are living: Mrs. Ann E. Jones, Capt. Joseph, Mrs. Mary Tucker, William and James. Capt. Joseph Boisseau was reared principally in the State of Tennessee, his early days being spent on his father's plantation, and in that State his early education was acquired. In September, 1849, he came to Shreveport, La., and secured employment as a clerk in a warehouse, being engaged in billing and shipping, hie employer being E. C. Hart (now deceased). He remained with him until 18583, then began steam boating on the Upper Red River and down to New Orleans, and in time became commander of the steamers "Marion," "Newsboy" and "Trent". he continued to follow this calling with fair success until 1861, then enlisted in the First Louisiana Regiment of Caddo Rifles, and served the cause he espoused faithfully until November of that year, when he put in a substitute and went to New Orleans and purchased the steamer "Trent", expecting the blockade to be raised, and fitted her up for that purpose. The blockade failing, he ran his boat in the service of the Confederate government until some time in 1863, when he sold the "Trent", and was afterward appointed by Jefferson Davis as pilot of the gunboat "Missouri", which had been built at Shreveport. This boat he took to Alexandria, to defend the forts at that place, and was there kept until the final surrender, the Captain receiving his parole on this boat. He then became pilot of the steamer "Cotton", that took the generals in command of the trans-Mississippi Department to the mouth of Red River, where the final terms of surrender were made, their names being Buckner, Price, Maj. Means and Lieut. Carter. After surrendering, the boat "Cotton" was given up to the Federal officers at Shreveport. Capt. Boisseau then returned to Shreveport, La., and embarked in the wholesale grocery and cotton business, the firm of Walsh & Boisseau became sole proprietor, and as such has since continued. He has seen Shreveport grow from a village to its present admirable proportions, and he has always identified himself with its interests in every way. he owns about 6,000 acres of fine farming land, controls as much more, and is the owner of some valuable business buildings in the city, which are located on Front and Milan Streets, and several choice residence lots, which he offers for sale on the most reasonable terms. He is one of the heaviest tax-payers in the city, is doing well in every enterprise in which he is engaged, and is one of the substantial and honored citizens of this section, for he is public spirited, upright in every worthy particular, and is kind, generous and manly at all times. He has never been an aspirant for office, buy has paid strict attention to the details of his business, and as a result, is one of the wealthy men of this section. He is a member and director of the Cotton Exchange, and is also one of the directors of the Commercial National Bank. He was married in 1866 to Miss Josephine E. Boisseau, of Virginia, by whom he has a family of four sons and three daughters: Joseph, Jr., Nettie P., Elizabeth S., Richie W., James H., Richard W. and Robert C. Mrs. Boisseau is a worthy member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and socially he belongs to the Masonic fraternity and the K. of P.

Joseph Boisseau, the fourth child of Joseph Williamson Boisseau and Julia A.

Rives, was born on January 23, 1829. When his father moved the family to

Harrison County, Texas from Fayette County, Tennessee, Joseph instead decided

to move out on his own, to Shreveport, Louisiana. It is unknown if he set off

on his own from Fayette County, or moved with the family to Texas and then set

out, but by 1850 he was living in Shreveport, Louisiana. Shortly after the Civil War, he returned

to Virginia, where he met and fell in love with his cousin, Josephine

Elizabeth Boisseau, the daughter of James Poythress Boisseau and Elizabeth Ann

Scott. They married on April 11, 1866, and afterwards, they returned to

Shreveport, Louisiana. He opened a wholesale grocery, and a cotton business in

Shreveport. Joseph died there on December 23, 1905. Josephine Boisseau died on
